A Fresh Start After Sexual Sin

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 NIV).

God’s standards never change. Premarital sex is unacceptable. It always has been. It always will be. Living together without getting married is unacceptable to God. It always has been. It always will be. Adultery, being unfaithful in your marriage, is unacceptable to God. It always has been. It always will be. Pornography is unacceptable to God. It always has been. It always will be.But if you’ve been guilty of one of those sins, that’s not the end of your story. God gives you a chance to come clean and start over. How do you do that?

  1. Repent. Repent means “to change your mind.” You say, “You were right, God. I was wrong. What I did was sin.” You don’t rationalize your sin or excuse it. The most important part is, you do this now. If you’re currently in the middle of an affair, end it today.
  2. Receive forgiveness. God is waiting to forgive, cleanse, and restore you. He’ll release you from the shame, regrets, hidden hurts, and pain that come from your sin so you don’t carry them into your next relationship. God wants to wipe the slate clean. The good news is, once he’s forgiven you, you can forgive yourself.
  3. Refocus and replace. You make a commitment to live morally pure by God’s standard from this day forward. That means having sex only with the person to whom you’re married.
  4. Request help daily. Commit your life to Christ (if you haven’t already). Ask him to help you manage your sex drive.

Your sexual drive can destroy you if you let it. Don’t let it. You have a choice.

STOP WORRYING long enough to hear My voice. I speak softly to you, in the depths of your being. Your mind shuttles back and forth, hither and yon, weaving webs of anxious confusion. As My thoughts rise up within you, they become entangled in those sticky webs of worry. Thus, My voice is muffled, and you hear only “white noise.”
Ask My Spirit to quiet your mind so that you can think My thoughts. This ability is an awesome benefit of being My child, patterned after My own image. Do not be deafened by the noise of the world or that of your own thinking. Instead, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Sit quietly in My Presence, letting My thoughts reprogram your thinking.

. . and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will
give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
DEUTERONOMY 30 : 20

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.
GENESIS 1 : 27

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able
to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
ROMANS 12 : 2

Keep Developing Your Skills

If you don’t exercise your muscles, they weaken and atrophy. In the same way, if you don’t utilize the abilities and skill God has given you, you will lose them. Jesus taught the parable of the talents to emphasize this truth. Referring to the servant who failed to use his one talent, the master said, “Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents.” (Matthew 25:28 NIV)

Fail to use what you’ve been given and you’ll lose it. Use the ability you’ve got and God will increase it.

Whatever gifts you have been given can be enlarged and developed through practice. For instance, no one gets the gift of teaching fully developed. But with study, feedback, and practice, a “good” teacher can become a better teacher.

Stretch yourself and learn all you can. Take advantage of every training opportunity to develop your shape and sharpen your serving skill.

In heaven, we are all going to serve God forever. Right now, we can prepare for that eternal service by practicing on earth. Like athletes preparing for the Olympics, we keep training for that big day. “They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.” (1 Corinthians 9:25 Msg)
